Joe McGinty and Eddie Skuller release an enchanted version of “Town Without Pity”
Celebrating over six decades since its initial release, Gene Pitney's classic hit "Town Without Pity" has found new life in the first single from The Pitney Project, a deeply haunting tribute by acclaimed singer-songwriter Eddie Skuller and multi-talented producer and musician Joe McGinty. “Town Without Pity” originally was featured in a film of the same title and remains a quintessential piece of music history. The collaboration of Eddie Skuller & Joe McGinty reimagines this classic song.
Joe McGinty produced, performed and arranged the track featuring Eddie Skuller’s evocative vocals. Skuller has often been compared to Pitney and recruited McGinty for the brilliance of his textured keyboard arrangements. Joe McGinty, who owns a vintage keyboard studio in Brooklyn featuring over 30 electronic and analog synthesizers, brought his broad and unusual sensibility to the project.
Joe McGinty is also recognized as the founder and music director of the popular Losers Lounge tribute series. In this series, local talent pays homage to pop icons of the past and performs in renowned venues such as Joe's Pub and City Winery in New York City. Joe McGinty has previously paired Eddie Skuller with Gene Pitney songs at these shows, making The Pitney Project an inevitable recording.
Joe McGinty states, "I’m excited to work on The Pitney Project with Eddie. When we’ve covered Gene Pitney at Loser’s Lounge, Eddie was always the first singer I thought of. I’m happy that he presented this opportunity to me to reimagine 'Town Without Pity' with my assortment of vintage analog instruments

lyrics

When you're young and so in love as we
And bewildered by the world we see
Why do people hurt us so?
Only those in love would know
What a town without pity can do
If we stop to gaze upon a star
People talk about how bad we are
Ours is not an easy age
We're like tigers in a cage
What a town without pity can do
The young have problems, many problems
We need an understanding heart
Why don't they help us, try to help us
Before this clay and granite planet falls apart
Take these eager lips and hold me fast
I'm afraid this kind of joy can't last
How can we keep love alive
How can anything survive
When these little minds tear you in two?
What a town without pity can do
How can we keep love alive
How can anything survive
When these little minds tear you in two?
What a town without pity can do
No, it isn't very pretty what a town without pity can do
